 Bancontact/MisterCash (BC/MC) Payments

Description of the function

In a BC/MC payment transaction the cardholder can request the transfer of money from the cardholder’s account to the merchant’s account. This transaction is authorised by the BANKSYS systems according to the rules of BC/MC debit card scheme. The cardholder confirms his identity by his Personal Identification Number.

Every card has an encoded ISO-2 track. If the card is equipped with a chip, this is indicated in the track. In that case, it is mandatory to use chip functions for the transaction processing.

It might be required, in preparation of the BC/MC payment, to reset the card in an operational state . BC/MC payment terminals will also support this reset purse function (see below).

POS terminals in a merchant environment

Devices in a public POS environment are equipped with a secure pinpad and a CSM.

Using a BC/MC proprietary application protocol

The merchant’s terminal accesses the BANKSYS systems over the Public Switched Telephone Network, ISDN-D or BANKNET-TCP/IP using a BANKSYS proprietary protocol.

Card usage can lead to situations where the status of the card is undetermined. In some cases, the applications in the terminals are instructed to temporarily lock the card, until an on-line control with the BANKSYS systems allows to resolve the ambiguity and restore the card back to the normal operational state.

Another example is the successive introduction of erroneous PINs by the cardholder until the number of trials is exhausted. Only the BANKSYS systems can decide to reset the number of PIN trials.

Displaying the e-purse balance

In a local interaction between the card’s chip and the terminal, the local application can retrieve the purse balance and limited journal information.
